Description:
Abstract:
Colorado hydrographic dataset sourced primarily from 1:100K USGS DLGs.  This dataset has been modified for pulic distribution.

Purpose:
This dataset is intended to graphically represent Colorado's hydrography at a scale no less than 1:24,000.

Supplemental information:
1:24000 scale statewide water body features.

Data Sources: 
1:24K USGS DRGs.

Feature Items- Polygons:
FEATURE, DOW_NAME, DOW_NAME2, NAME1, NAME2, HYDROCODE, QUADCODE, SOURCE, AREA_BIO, ELEVATION1.

FEATURE. This attribute was created to simplify feature type. It was created by combining several fields which have been omitted in this version of the dataset.

This may include - Dam, Ditch, Ice Mass, Inundation Area, Intermittent Lake, Intermittent Stream, Marsh, Non-Lake Reservoir, Perennial Lake, Perennial Stream, Playa, Wash.

DOW_NAME.  This is the feature name found in the CDOW aquatic database.

NAME.  This is the feature name modified for cartographic purposes.

HYDROCODE.  Delineates the eight digit hydro unit code in which the stream arc segment falls.

QUADCODE.  Delineates the topographic Quad number in which the stream arc segment falls.

SOURCE.  CDOW, CFF or DLG-3.

AREA_BIO.  This field identifies the initials of the CDOW area biologist charged with managing the particular water.

ELEVATION1.  This is the elevation found on the map associated with waterbody polygons. 

Polygon attributes:
STREAM polygons have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Perennial or Intermittent Stream.  Polygonal stream labels do NOT get a braid attribute or a connector attribute.  

DITCH polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Ditch.  Polygonal ditch labels do NOT get a braid attribute or a connector attribute.  

WASH polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Wash.  All washes greater than 1" on the map are collected.  Washes are NOT collected around polygonal streams.  

DAM polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Dam.  Polygonal dams are collected only if the associated water body is named.  Dams are collected if they are clearly defined by modified contours, named, and greater than .020" on the map. 

LAKE polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Perennial or Intermittent Lake.  All water bodies that are not identified on the map as non-lake features are collected as lakes.  Lakes bounded by a dashed blue line on the map are collected as intermittent lakes.  Lakes that are not clearly identified as perennial or intermittent are coded as intermittent. 

PLAYA polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Playa.  A playa is a dry lake and can be identified on the map as "Dry Lake" or "Alkali". 

MARSH polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE =  Marsh.  Marshes along polygonal streams are collected.  

INUNDATION AREA polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Inundation Area.  Inundation areas can be stand alone water bodies.  Inundations can overlap with dams.

NON- LAKE RESERVOIR polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Non-Lake Reservoir.  Non-Lake reservoirs are bodies of water sometimes bounded by a black or dark blue lines and stand out as not being a typical natural lake.  Most non-lake features are labeled on the map as being water storage ponds, tailings ponds, evaporation ponds, decorative ponds, cooling ponds; filtration ponds, settling ponds; sewage treatment ponds, and aquaculture ponds.  Water storage ponds are bounded by a blue line without text to indicate use.  Covered water storage ponds have gray slashed areas on the map.  Circular blue outlined water tanks are attributed as water storage ponds. Unknown water storage ponds bounded by black lines on the map are considered non-earthen.  Tailing ponds are defined in brown ink on the map.  Earthen sewage treatment ponds are bounded by dark blue lines.  Non-earthen sewage treatment ponds are bounded by dark blue lines and in a rectangular series of lakes or are bounded by black lines.  Black outlined water tanks are NOT collected. 

ICE MASS polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Ice Mass.  

SPILLWAY polygon labels have a defining attribute of FEATURE = Spillway.  Spillways that are identified by text but not delineated on the map are NOT collected.
 
ELEVATION values are collected if they are identified by text on the map.  Features with an elevation value on the map are attributed with ELEVATION1 = (elevation value on map).   Inundation polygons that have an elevation value on the map are attributed with the inundation elevation.  If a lake has an elevation value and a surrounding inundation elevation value the lake polygon receives the lake elevation.  Playas do NOT receive elevation values.  Benchmark elevations are NOT collected.  

NAMES of polygonal water features are determined by what is named on the map.  If a name is present it is attributed as Name1 = (name on the map).  Names beginning with 'Mc' were changed so that there are no spaces in the name.  For example, Mc Kenna Lake is changed to McKenna Lake.  When a water feature has more than one name the least significant name is applied to the second attributing scheme.  The second attribute scheme does NOT have to be populated with any other attributes if the water feature is the same.  For example, when there are individually named lakes in a group of lakes the individual lake names would be attributed to NAME1 while the name for the whole group of lakes would be attributed to NAME2.   Polygonal water features that may be named are dams, ice masses, inundation areas, lakes, playas, non-lake reservoirs, and marshes.  Inundation areas are populated with the name of the associated lake if the lake is named.  Polygonal dams are named ONLY if associated lake and the dam are named.  Polygonal dams receive the dam name.  In some cases the use of USGS GNISID name points were used to determine dam names.  Spillways do NOT receive a name attribute.  Polygonal stream and ditch labels do NOT receive a name attribute.  Polygonal water feature labels are NOT named using arc water feature names.
