Description:
Abstract:
Colorado hydrographic dataset sourced primarily from 1:100K USGS DLGs. This dataset has been modified for public distribution.

Purpose:
This dataset is intended to graphically represent Colorado's hydrography at a scale no less than 1:100,000.

Supplemental information:
Data Sources:
1:100K USGS DLGs, 1:24K USGS DRGs, various CDOW paper and hand-drawn map sources.

Feature Items- Arcs:
FEATURE, BRAID, ORDER_, AREA_BIO, NAME, DOW_NAME, DOW_NAME2.

FEATURE. This attribute was created to simplify feature type. It was created by combining several fields which have been omitted in this version of the dataset.

This may include - Artificial Flow Path (used to show network connectivity through polygonal features), Dam, Ditch, Intermittent Stream, Perennial Stream, Pipeline, Polygonal Feature Limit (denotes a border of a polygonal feature that is not actually a shoreline, such as the edge of a sandy wash or the maximum extent of an ice mass), Shoreline, Stream Connector.

BRAID. This is a flag for a stream segment whose downstream flow branches. Segments flagged as "braid" did not receive a stream order attribute.

ORDER_. Stream order was calculated using the Strahler stream-ordering method. Only applied to natural streams and associated artificial flow paths. Numerous edits have been made to the data since stream order was applied. It is out of date and used mainly for cartographic purposes. It should in no way be relied upon.

NAME. This is the feature name modified for cartographic purposes.

AREA_BIO. This field identifies the initials of the CDOW area biologist charged with managing the particular water.

DOW_NAME. This is the feature name found in the CDOW aquatic database.

DOW_NAME2. This is an alternate feature name found in the CDOW aquatic database.

Feature Items- Polygons:
FEATURE, AREA_BIO, DOW_NAME, DOW_NAME2.

FEATURE. This attribute was created to simplify feature type. It was created by combining several fields which have been omitted in this version of the dataset.

This may include - Ice Mass, Inundation Area, Intermittent Lake, Marsh, Perennial Lake, Perennial Stream, Playa, Spillway, Wash.

Reservoirs are defined as man-made features such as sewage treatment plants and aquaculture ponds.

Impounded lakes such as Horsetooth Reservoir are attributed as a lake.

As both arcs and polygons have been integrated into a single dataset, there are numerous polygons present that are formed by adjacent arcs but do not represent a defined feature. These incidental polygons have no assigned attributes and therefore FEATURE = "".

In many cases, the hydrographic condition of the lake could not be reliably determined from the source. In these cases the lakes were attributed as intermittent.

AREA_BIO. This field identifies the initials of the CDOW area biologist charged with managing the particular water.

DOW_NAME. This is the feature name found in the CDOW aquatic database.

DOW_NAME2. This is an alternate feature name found in the CDOW aquatic database.

Procedures used in producing this dataset:

The base for this dataset was assembled from 1:100K DLGs obtained directly from the USGS. The DLGs were projected into UTM zone 13 coordinates (NAD27, Clarke 1866) and stitched together. The DLGs had terrible edge-matching problems that required extensive editing. 1:24K DRGs were used as a guide to correct many edge problems and additional line work was digitized off of the DRGs as needed.

The primary goal of this dataset is to allow the identification of all features that have been assigned a CDOW water code. To achieve this goal it was necessary to add features that were not included in the 1:100K DLGs and to modify many of those that were present but poorly drawn. Additional features and corrections came primarily from 1:24K USGS sources, but in some cases were digitized from various CDOW maps and hand drawn sources. Because of the variety of sources used, it cannot be said that this cover is of any specific scale, although it should be no worse than 1:100K.

The Strahler stream order included with the cover will not match that of either a pure 1:100K dataset or a 1:24K dataset due to differences in the number of headwaters shown at those two scales.

A great deal of time was spent to ensure that all natural streams and their associated artificial flow paths flow downstream, however there are almost certainly errors remaining in the dataset. No attempt was made to correct the flow direction of ditches or other manmade features.

Connectors (type1 = 88) were added to streams to allow network connectivity. This was done in places where no barrier appeared to exist to impede the continued flow of water downstream. Connectors were limited in length to 1000m and were not added across ditches (it was assumed the ditch carried the flow). Where possible and convenient the connector was made to follow local topography, in other cases the connector is merely a straight line. The presence or absence of a connector will (of course) impact the stream order of the downstream segment. For instance, there are several locations where an order 4 or larger stream intersects a ditch. A gap in the stream below the ditch is depicted on USGS maps and is retained in the dataset. The result is that the downstream segment where the stream reappears drops back to order 1.
